Band 7.5 Task 2 Sample Essay — Technology and Human Connection

15 April 2026

The Question

"Some people think that modern technology is making people more sociable, while others think it is making them less sociable. Discuss both views and give your own opinion."

The Essay (Band 7.5)

The impact of modern technology on human social behaviour is a subject of considerable debate. While some argue that digital tools have expanded our social networks, others contend that they have eroded the quality of face-to-face interaction. In my view, although technology offers undeniable connectivity benefits, it ultimately diminishes the depth of human relationships.

Proponents of technology argue that platforms such as social media and messaging applications have made it significantly easier to maintain relationships across geographical boundaries. A person living abroad can now attend a family gathering virtually, and professionals can collaborate with colleagues on different continents in real time. In this sense, technology has unquestionably broadened the reach of human connection.

However, I would argue that this expanded reach comes at the cost of meaningful engagement. Research consistently shows that individuals who spend more time on social media report higher levels of loneliness. This apparent paradox arises because digital communication strips away the non-verbal cues — tone, expression, touch — that give human interaction its emotional weight. Consequently, while people may have hundreds of online connections, their capacity for deep, empathetic relationships may actually diminish.

In conclusion, technology has made us more connected in a superficial sense, but less capable of the kind of sustained, meaningful interaction that defines genuine sociability. Societies would benefit from treating digital communication as a supplement to, rather than a replacement for, in-person relationships.

Examiner Annotations

TA (8): Both views discussed, opinion stated in introduction and conclusion. Fully extended with relevant examples. CC (7.5): Clear paragraph progression, good use of concession structure in body paragraph 2. Minor issue: transition between paragraphs 1 and 2 could be smoother. LR (7.5): Strong range — "eroded", "contend", "paradox", "empathetic". No repetition issues. GRA (7): Mix of complex and simple structures. "strips away" is idiomatic and accurate. One minor article error ommitted from this version.
